Rights Respecting Schools Award

Computing has deep links with mathematics, science and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems.

The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Aims

The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
  • can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
  • can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
  • are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

Attainment targets

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.

Key Stage 1

Pupils should be taught to:

  • understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions
  • create and debug simple programs
  • use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs
  • use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content
  • recognise common uses of information technology beyond school
  • use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private; identify where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies.

Key Stage 2

Pupils should be taught to:

  • design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems; solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts
  • use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output
  • use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and to detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs
  • understand computer networks including the internet; how they can provide multiple services, such as the world wide web; and the opportunities they offer for communication and collaboration
  • use search technologies effectively, appreciate how results are selected and ranked, and be discerning in evaluating digital content
  • select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information
  • use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.

E-Safety

At Manadon Vale, our pupils are taught about e-safety through various different methods. We use school assemblies, both whole school and Key Stage, alongside dedicated computing and PSHE sessions.

We currently use two main resources for teaching this important skill.

In Key Stage 1, we have just started to use the brand new resource from ThinkUKnow called Jessie & Friends.

In Key Stage 2, we have been using the fanstic resource called BeInternetLegends. This is produced by Google and Parent Zone, and the resources are also have accreditation from the PSHE Association.

Code Club

We have a very popular computing club at Manadon Vale, called the Code Club. The resources and support materials help to teach the children in the club a variety of skills when coding using Scratch.

It has run for several years and the children who attend develop not just their skills of coding, but also become much more resilient and adaptable learners, taking on challenges and investigating problems that they might not feel so confident in doing in other subjects.

School Photo Day – Tomorrow Just a reminder that it is school photo day tomorrow. Children should come to school in full school uniform (no PE kits). If your child has PE, please send their PE kit in a bag to change into. Except Foundation Stage they do not require PE kits tomorrow at all. Thank you 😊

Dear Parents and Carers, We are delighted to announce that our school will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to discover new books, foster a love of reading, and help support our school. The Book Fair not only encourages reading for enjoyment but also raises valuable funds that will be used to purchase new books for our library and classrooms. Book Fair Details: Date(s): Monday 16th March, Tuesday 17th March and Thursday 19th March. Time(s): 8:00-8:30am and 3:00-3:45pm. Location: Year 5 and 6 learning space (upstairs past the school office) Students and families are warmly invited to attend before or after school. Payments can only be made via card as we are now a cashless school. More information about online payment options will be shared closer to the event. Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you at the Book Fair and appreciate your help in making this event a success. Kind regards, Miss Harris. Year 5 teacher and English lead.

Year 2 have had a very creative term 🎨 We enjoyed learning about the artist William Morris and had a go at printing to create our own wall paper, inspired by his love of nature and repeating patterns. We also loved performing our puppet show with our very own felt puppets, linked to the story ‘Oh Dear!’ Well done year 2 👏🏼

We took 2 combined yr3/4 teams to a tournament today at Marjons. Despite drizzly weather all day, both teams were excellent and qualified from their groups. As predicted, they ended up having to play each other in the quarter finals. After winning the quarters our Manadon 'Athletic' team went on to win their semi final 2-1 Vs Leigham and then also win the final 2-1 Vs Widey. Well done to both teams! And a special well done for winning the tournament!
