The PE curriculum and vision

Computing has deep links with mathematics, science and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems.

The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Aims

The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
  • can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
  • can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
  • are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

Attainment targets

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.

Key Stage 1

Pupils should be taught to:

  • understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions
  • create and debug simple programs
  • use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs
  • use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content
  • recognise common uses of information technology beyond school
  • use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private; identify where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies.

Key Stage 2

Pupils should be taught to:

  • design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems; solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts
  • use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output
  • use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and to detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs
  • understand computer networks including the internet; how they can provide multiple services, such as the world wide web; and the opportunities they offer for communication and collaboration
  • use search technologies effectively, appreciate how results are selected and ranked, and be discerning in evaluating digital content
  • select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information
  • use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.

E-Safety

At Manadon Vale, our pupils are taught about e-safety through various different methods. We use school assemblies, both whole school and Key Stage, alongside dedicated computing and PSHE sessions.

We currently use two main resources for teaching this important skill.

In Key Stage 1, we have just started to use the brand new resource from ThinkUKnow called Jessie & Friends.

In Key Stage 2, we have been using the fanstic resource called BeInternetLegends. This is produced by Google and Parent Zone, and the resources are also have accreditation from the PSHE Association.

Code Club

We have a very popular computing club at Manadon Vale, called the Code Club. The resources and support materials help to teach the children in the club a variety of skills when coding using Scratch.

It has run for several years and the children who attend develop not just their skills of coding, but also become much more resilient and adaptable learners, taking on challenges and investigating problems that they might not feel so confident in doing in other subjects.

A huge congratulations to all 78 entries in our RRS competition! The RRS school leaders came together to select a winner, and we're excited to announce that Chloe's design has won. Her design will now be made into a t-shirt and become the official RRS mascot for the school. Well done, Chloe!👏⭐

⚽️ We may not have won the tournament but the Year 6 Football team played to an exceptional standard this afternoon against strong teams! They demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, teamwork and even though they didn't get the result they wanted, they NEVER backed down from the challenge! They have made us all SO proud! Well done, MVPS! 💙❤️💛 🌟

This year, World Book Day will take place on Thursday 6th March and as a school we are celebrating it. We want to encourage the children at Manadon to enjoy reading and use the power of books to educate and entertain. This year at Manadon, we would like each year group to dress up as a character from a book by a famous author. The following year groups and authors have been selected by our teachers. These are: EYFS: Eric Carle Year1: Julia Donaldson Year2: Oliver Jeffers Year3: Terry Deary Year4: Roger Hargreaves Year5: JK Rowling Year6: David Walliams All year groups will be reading stories and snippets from these authors over the next few weeks, in the build-up to World Book Day, so that the children have knowledge and understanding of this author and the stories they have written. Each year group will also be completing various activities based on the stories and characters from their chosen author. Activities may include writing, artwork, research, role play etc. Why celebrate World Book Day? -Promote reading: World Book Day encourages people to read for fun, which can lead to a happier and more successful life. -Celebrate books: World Book Day is a day to celebrate the joy of reading and sharing books. -Bridge divides: World Book Day aims to use books to bridge divides and promote education. If you are struggling for costume ideas for your child/children, please feel free to speak to your child's class teacher. Please do not feel that you have to go out and buy a new costume, wearing clothing and bits and pieces from home is absolutely fine, even if it is not a direct match to a character. Thank you. Whole School Writing Competition 💙💙💙 This week is National Storytelling Week and we are hosting another writing competition in celebration. The theme this year is ‘Reimagine your world’. Whether it’s something unexpected on your way to school, odd sounds you hear at night, or a path you’ve never followed, the world around us is full of secret lives, places and possibilities. The most extraordinary story can come from the most ordinary place: it just needs someone to find it. All children are invited to write a story based on this year’s theme. 🏆 4 winners will win their very own writing journal, a packet of pens and sweets. 1 winner will be chosen from the following: EYFS, KS1, LKS2 (yrs3&4) & UKS2 (yrs5&6). EYFS and children who find writing a challenge can say their story to an adult who can scribe it for them. Be as imaginative and creative as you like 😌 The closing date is Thursday 27th February and the 4 winners will be announced in the whole school assembly on Monday 3rd March. Please hand all entries to your class teacher. Thank you and happy writing, Miss Harris. English Lead and Year 6 teacher.

These two didn’t take long to decide on the book they wanted for winning this wonderful trip to Waterstones and Costa as part of the whole school reading incentive. A huge thank you as always to our amazing Manadon Vale PTFA - without your funding this wouldn’t be possible! Both children opted for a cold drink today instead of hot chocolate. 😋 💙💙💙💙

🎼🌟 Young Voices 2025 🌟🎼 What an incredible, unforgettable experience! For the last five months, 14 of our Music Club members have been working hard for this moment - an opportunity to be belong to the largest children's choir in the world! The children were shining representatives of the school and we are so very proud of them - they collaborated with Urban Strides to create a rave of 8,000 people and harmonised alongside celebrities such as MC Grammar, Strictly singer Tommy Blaize and Britain's Got Talent winner, Souparnika Nair (who used to sing in Young Voices too!). Phew! Look out, Year 5 Music Club members ... this could be you next year! 👀

Year 2 children have thoroughly enjoyed their gymnastics lessons! They’ve learned a lot, from mastering basic moves to developing new skills. The lessons have been a great opportunity for them to build strength, flexibility, and coordination while having fun. Key areas of focus included balance exercises, basic tumbling, and simple routines. It’s been fantastic to see them progress and gain confidence in their abilities.
