Rights Respecting Schools Award

Through finding out about how and why the world, our country, cultures and local communities have developed overtime, our children leave Manadon Vale Primary School understanding how the past influences the present. This, we believe develops a context for their growing identities as they move thorough education and beyond.

At Manadon Vale Primary School, we provide a comprehensive and engaging history curriculum that fosters a deep understanding of the past while nurturing our children’s curiosity and critical thinking skills. Our primary history curriculum is designed to incorporate an "Enquiry-Based Learning" approach, ensuring that substantive concepts run through the curriculum, building knowledge, and promoting a lifelong love for history.

The primary history curriculum focuses on substantive concepts that are fundamental to understanding the complexity and interconnectedness of historical events. These concepts are carefully integrated throughout the different year groups and topics, ensuring continuity and coherence in learning.

Teachers design lesson plans that encourage students to ask questions, investigate historical evidence, and draw conclusions. Enquiry-based activities, such as analysing primary sources and role-playing historical figures, are incorporated regularly. The history curriculum is integrated with other subjects, such as English, geography, and art, to reinforce substantive concepts and provide a holistic learning experience.

Year 4 Update This term, Year 4 have been very busy across all areas of the curriculum and have enjoyed lots of hands-on learning experiences. In Science, we have been studying Teeth and the Digestive System. One of our experiments investigated which liquids cause the most tooth decay. We used eggs to represent tooth enamel and discovered that vinegar causes the most damage to teeth. We also explored faeces and how scientists can examine it to identify what animals eat and detect potential illnesses. To support this learning, we played “Poo Bingo” and made different types of faeces out of playdough for each other to identify! In Art, we enjoyed designing and creating our own sculptures in the style of Henry Moore using clay. In DT, we have just started our new unit on designing and making our own pizzas, linked to our previous History learning about Ancient Rome. Last week, we tasted a variety of pizzas and rated them out of 5. We described what we liked and disliked about each one, helping us to choose our favourite toppings ready for designing and making our own pizzas on our Italian Day next week. In Maths, TTRockstars battles are really motivating the children to learn their times tables. Starfish class thoroughly enjoyed their well-deserved cakes for winning this round-well done!

We are so proud of one of our lovely children here at Manadon Vale, who took the time to write a thoughtful letter to Crownhill Fire and Rescue Service 🚒 It’s wonderful to see such kindness, curiosity, and appreciation for the amazing work our emergency services do every day. Well done – what a fantastic example of using your voice to make a positive connection in our community! 👏

🍓🍌 DT Smoothie Making – Octopuses Class 🥝🍊 The children have been learning about healthy foods and designed their own smoothies. They then helped to chop, slice and prepare their ingredients before making their creations. Great teamwork and lots of tasty results! 🍹✨

Today in PE, the children in Octopuses had a fantastic time developing their jumping skills! We focused on four different types of jumps: rocket, star, tuck and pike. The children showed great enthusiasm as they practised each one, working hard to improve their technique, balance and control. Please excuse the slightly blurry photos… turns out capturing super-speedy action jumps is harder than it looks!

Today we held our Living Street Audit and had the opportunity to show Anna all the fantastic work we’ve been doing. We shared our ideas, discussed what’s important to us, and highlighted the changes we would love to see around our school to make the area safer. The children were brilliant at explaining their thoughts and it was amazing to see their confidence and passion shine through. We’re so proud of their hard work and can’t wait to see what happens next!🚧🚧
