Rights Respecting Schools Award

We are proud to announce that Manadon Vale Primary School has achieved the Silver: Rights Aware accreditation from the UNICEFUK Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA).

As a Silver: Rights Aware school:

  • We embed the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into our policies, practice and ethos.
  • We promote knowledge and understanding of children’s rights throughout our whole school community.
  • Our children are developing as rights-respecting global citizens and advocate for fairness, both in school and beyond

The ABCDE of Rights at Manadon Vale

At Manadon Vale, our Rights Respecting journey is built on the ABCDE of Rights, which helps every child understand what it means to live in a rights-respecting community.

  • A – Rights for All: Rights belong to every child, everywhere, and are agreed internationally by the United Nations.
  • B – From Birth: Every child has these rights from the moment they are born.
  • C – Cannot be Taken Away: Rights are permanent and cannot be removed under any circumstances.
  • D – Don’t Have to Be Earned: Rights are not privileges; they are guaranteed to all children automatically.
  • E – All Equal: Every right is equal — no right is more important than another.

At Manadon Vale, we uphold all 54 rights outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We also teach that with every right comes responsibility — our pupils learn to respect the rights of others and contribute positively to our school and wider community.

These values are woven into our lessons, assemblies, and daily life, helping children understand both their rights and their responsibilities, ensuring they grow into caring, responsible, and empowered individuals.

At Manadon Vale:

  • Children’s rights are at the heart of everything we do — in classrooms, in the playground, on school trips and in our wider community.
  • Pupils, staff, parents and governors work together to uphold and model these rights.
  • We involve children as active partners: their voices matter, their views are listened to, and they are encouraged to respect the rights of others.
  • We reflect this commitment in our school values of collaboration, resilience, curiosity, wellbeing and community.

🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️ WOW Walk to School Update! 🌟 We are so proud of our children’s commitment to active travel! Children have now earned their second WOW badges, which our School Council will be handing out tomorrow. Well done everyone! 👏 In December, 194 children earned their first WOW badge. In January, an incredible 254 children have now earned either their first or second badge! That means 92% of our school is now taking part in at least one active journey to school each week – what an amazing achievement! 🌍💚

Today, we had an exciting visit from Peninsula Dental, who delivered the “Open Wide and Step Inside” program to our Year 2 students! The children had a fantastic time learning about dental care and each received a book, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a timer to help them practice good oral hygiene at home. 🦷

Year 4 started a new Science unit this term, Animals Including Humans. In the first week, we began by recapping our learning about skeletons from Year 3 and discussing how this links to our new focus on the digestive system in Year 4. We started by labelling the parts of the digestive system and learning about their functions. We then took part in a very hands-on science experiment to explore how each part works and how food travels through the body. The children were fully immersed and thoroughly enjoyed the experience—although some were feeling quite queasy by the end! 🤢What a fantastic way to start our new topic! 👏😄

💡🌍 Energy Saving Week 🌍💡 Next week we are supporting Energy Saving Week by making small changes to save energy and help our planet. Our school council members will be reminding everyone to switch off lights and screens when they’re not in use and to think about how we can all use less energy every day. We are also continuing taking part in the WOW Walk to School scheme, encouraging children to walk, scoot, or cycle. Some children are very close to earning their second WOW badge — amazing effort! 🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️

Year 1 Art 🏺 This term, Year 1 have been exploring clay pots in art. We looked at different techniques, including pinch pots and coil pots, and discussed how artists use these methods to create shape and pattern. We first designed our pots using playdough, then used our ideas to create our own clay pots today. The children showed great focus and creativity while working with the clay. Next week, we will be evaluating our finished pots and talking about what we like and what we would improve next time.
