PSHE

At Manadon Vale Primary School, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is an important part of our curriculum and school life. We want every child to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to stay safe, look after their wellbeing, build positive relationships and become responsible members of their community.

Our PSHE curriculum is based on the Jigsaw scheme of work and is adapted to meet the needs of our children and our school community. Learning takes place through discussions, stories, drama, videos, practical activities, questions, reflection and opportunities to apply learning to real-life situations.

PSHE is not just taught in a weekly lesson. It is woven through our school values, relationships, assemblies, pupil leadership, safeguarding, enrichment opportunities and the everyday life of our school.

🌱 Our Jigsaw PSHE Curriculum

Jigsaw provides a structured and progressive approach to PSHE from Early Years through to Year 6.

Throughout their time at Manadon Vale, children explore six key areas:

1.  Being Me in My World
Developing a sense of identity, belonging, responsibility and positive relationships with others.

2. Celebrating Difference
Understanding and respecting differences between people and recognising the importance of inclusion and equality.

3.  Dreams and Goals
Developing resilience, ambition, perseverance and an understanding of how we can work towards our goals.

4. Healthy Me
Learning about physical and mental health, healthy lifestyles, personal safety and making positive choices.

5. Relationships
Understanding friendships, families, respectful relationships, communication, boundaries and how to seek help when needed.

6.  Changing Me
Learning about growing and changing, including age-appropriate relationships, puberty and preparation for the next stage of life.

Our curriculumis carefully planned so that children's knowledge and understanding develop as they move through the school.

💚 Rights Respecting School

Children's rights are an important part of life at Manadon Vale.

We are proud to be a UNICEF Rights Respecting School and our PSHE curriculum provides many opportunities for children to learn about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

Children learn about their rights and the responsibilities that come with them. We use the language of rights holders and duty bearers throughout school and encourage children to understand that everyone has rights, regardless of their background or circumstances.

We want our children to understand not only what their rights are, but also how they can respect the rights of others.

🗣️ Children's Voice and School Parliament

We believe children should have a genuine voice in their school.

Our School Parliament gives children from Years 2–6 the opportunity to represent their classmates, share ideas and concerns, ask questions and work with adults to make positive changes.

Parliament members:

• Represent the views of their class.
• Listen carefully to the opinions of other children.
• Share children's ideas at Parliament meetings.
• Help identify things that could be improved in school.
• Work together to find solutions.
• Take part in school projects and campaigns.
• Help make sure children's voices are heard by adults.

Our School Parliament has worked on projects including children's wellbeing, playground improvements and road safety. They have also campaigned for safer roads around our school, helping to raise awareness of the need for improved signage and a safer crossing.

Our children have also had opportunities to take part in the Connect Council, working alongside pupils from other schools across the Trust.

🧠 Mental Health and Wellbeing

Children's emotional wellbeing is a key part of our PSHE provision.

We teach children to recognise and talk about their feelings, develop resilience and understand that it is okay to ask for help.

Across school,children have access to:

• Pastoral support
• Drop-in opportunities
• Our Star Group
• Mental health and wellbeing activities
• Trusted adults they can talk to

We also provide opportunities for children to develop confidence, independence and resilience through leadership roles, challenges, enrichment and the wider life of our school.

PSHE helps children develop the knowledge and confidence to keep themselves and others safe.

• Respectful relationships
• Consent and bodily autonomy in age-appropriate ways
• Online safety
• Safe and unsafe situations
• How to recognise when something does not feel right
• How to seek help from a trusted adult
• Bullying and respectful behaviour
• Harmful or inappropriate behaviour
• Drugs, alcohol, smoking and vaping
• Road and community safety
• Basic first aid and emergency situations

Safeguarding is woven throughout our PSHE curriculum, with staff responding to concerns in line with our safeguarding and child protection procedures.

💻 Online Safety

Technology isan important part of children's lives, so we help children understand how touse it safely and responsibly.

Children learnabout:

• Keeping personal information private
• Age restrictions for games, apps and social media
• Positive and respectful online communication
• Healthy online relationships
• Online content that may be inappropriate or upsetting
• How to recognise risks
• What to do if something online makes them feel uncomfortable or unsafe
• How and where to report concerns

We want children to become confident and responsible digital citizens who understand both the opportunities and risks associated with technology.

🌈 Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

We celebrate the similarities and differences that make every person unique.

Through PSHE, children learn to:

• Respect themselves and others
• Recognise and challenge stereotypes
• Understand that families can be different
• Celebrate diversity
• Develop empathy and understanding
• Recognise unfairness and discrimination
• Understand that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect

We ensure that learning is age-appropriate, inclusive and accessible to all children, including pupils with SEND.

💷 Preparing Children for Life

PSHE helps children develop skills that they will use throughout their lives.

As children progress through the school, they learn about money and economic wellbeing, including making choices, understanding needs and wants, saving and spending, work and careers, and developing responsible attitudes towards money.

We also provide opportunities for children to develop independence, leadership and decision-making skills so that they are increasingly prepared for the next stage of their education and life beyond primary school.

🌍 PSHE Beyond the Classroom

At Manadon Vale, we believe some of the most meaningful PSHE learning happens when children can put their knowledge into practice.

Our children have opportunities to take part in campaigns, fundraising, community projects, leadership activities and educational visits.

Examples include:

🏛️ Parliament and Democracy

Our School Parliament has had the opportunity to visit London and the Houses of Parliament, giving children a first-hand experience of democracy and helping them understand how decisions are made.

🚸 Road Safety

Our children have worked with adults and local organisations to campaign for safer roads around our school. Their work has contributed to improved road signage, with the children continuing to campaign for further improvements.

🌳 Environmental Responsibility

Through our environmental work, Eco Council and wider school projects, children develop an understanding of their responsibility towards the environment and their local community.

❤️Charity and Community

Children regularly take part in fundraising and charitable activities, helping them understand compassion, community and the importance of supporting others.
