The PE curriculum and vision

We provide a high-quality science education, building the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all children are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, children at Manadon are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all children:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

Manadon uses a curriculum plan developed by Plymouth Science.  This provides clear guidance to all teaching staff on the progression and application of substantive and disciplinary knowledge and skills expected for each topic, in each year group.  Key vocabulary is identified for each science topic and it is expected that these keywords will be explored through teaching and be displayed in classrooms and/or in books.

🌟 Take a look at Year 1’s fantastic writing! 🌟 This week, we thought about someone special in our lives and explained why they mean so much to us. We were inspired by the beautiful story The Invisible String, which teaches us that we are all connected by an invisible thread of love — no matter how near or far we are.

⚓️ Year 2 had a jolly good time today following instructions to make a pirate hat ☠️ We also learnt in guided reading that pirates don’t actually say ‘arrrr’ or bury their treasure…it’s all a myth!

Foundation Stage have been busy in maths over the past few weeks. We have been learning about sorting objects in different ways and height. We have enjoyed measuring and drawing around ourselves to see how tall we are. The children have been using the vocabulary in all areas of the provision. Great job Turtles and Seahorses 👏

🌍 World Mental Health Day – October 10th 🌍 As a Rights Respecting School, we know every child has the right to be healthy, safe, and listened to. Today, we’re thinking about the importance of mental health and encouraging everyone to talk about their feelings and support one another.

There is a free Harry Potter event this week at Crownhill library on Wednesday after school and at Efford library on Thursday. Here is a picture of the crafts activities that they will be doing with the children - they can make a quill and a fortune teller, colour in a character bookmark (or a colour a sock for Dobby to add to our free-a-house elf display). Thanks, Miss Harris.

This afternoon our Year 4 boys played in one of the highest quality school games I’ve seen at this age! ⚽️ The standard of football on show was outstanding. Both teams played with skill and game understanding well beyond their years. Thank you to MAP for hosting us in such a brilliant fixture, which also happened to be a family affair as it was also Mr Cuzner vs Mr Cuzner too ha 😆 This was the boys’ first game playing together, and it’s made me incredibly excited to see what lies ahead for this talented group. 💪💙

🚓 A Visit from Our Local Police Officers! 👮‍♀️👮‍♂️ This morning, some year groups had the exciting opportunity to meet PC Jones and PC Cavey! The children loved exploring the police car and asking lots of thoughtful questions about the important work our police do in the community.
