About this curriculum

We provide a high-quality science education, building the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all children are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, children at Manadon are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all children:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

Manadon uses a curriculum plan developed by Plymouth Science.  This provides clear guidance to all teaching staff on the progression and application of substantive and disciplinary knowledge and skills expected for each topic, in each year group.  Key vocabulary is identified for each science topic and it is expected that these keywords will be explored through teaching and be displayed in classrooms and/or in books.

Today we had a visit from Rachel May from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. The whole school attended an assembly on the importance of fire safety. Year 2 and Year 5 students participated in a more in-depth lesson, where they learned essential safety measures and how to respond in case of a fire emergency🔥

🌟 Year 5 have been learning about figurative language in English - the children had a creative writing session where they could 'show off' their understanding of similies, metaphors and personification and WOW! Miss Eastgate is SO impressed with the quality of writing and the enthusiasm - professional authors in the making!!! 📖💙

Marlins Class Parents and Carers: The children's homework this week was to complete their Pompeii newspaper reports on their Teams accounts. I have been made aware though, that there have been some issues with logging in to Teams, for some people. If this is the case, the children can complete the work on their own word processing program and email it to me, or we will find some time at school for them to complete it.
