Rights Respecting Schools Award

We provide a high-quality science education, building the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all children are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, children at Manadon are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all children:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

Manadon uses a curriculum plan developed by Plymouth Science.  This provides clear guidance to all teaching staff on the progression and application of substantive and disciplinary knowledge and skills expected for each topic, in each year group.  Key vocabulary is identified for each science topic and it is expected that these keywords will be explored through teaching and be displayed in classrooms and/or in books.

How fabulous are these chaps?! 🏉🤩 Great pals playing on opposing teams, showing great sportsmanship and a love of the game, with one of the boys coming away with Man of the Match for his tackling skills and teamwork. We're very proud to call you MVPS children! Well done, lads!

Penguins' Perfect pizzas! What a fabulous day! After recently designing pizzas based on our tasting session earlier in the term, today we made our final mini pizzas for our 'customer'. We also made our own pizza chef hats, designed and created our pizza boxes and made bunting based on the Italian flag colours.

Italian Day! 🇮🇹 Starfish had a wonderful day celebrating all things Italian today! All the children got into the Italian spirit by wearing green, white, and red ❤️🤍💚 We started the morning by making our own chef hats 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳 and decorating them with Italian images. We then designed our pizza boxes 📦, creating our own unique logos ✏️. Later, we carefully transferred our designs onto the boxes, thinking about how to make them eye-catching, appealing, and fun 🎨✨ After break, we made bunting and flags in the Italian colours 🇮🇹, followed by the highlight of the day-pizza making! 🍕 The children created their own pizzas, using the designs they had planned last week. Finally, the afternoon was spent enjoying our delicious masterpiece pizzas and evaluating them. What a wonderful day full of fun! 🎉

Well done to Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 for a fantastic day planting their trees, drawing Mushi and listening to a fantastic story! 🌱✨ A big thank you to all the parents and carers who joined us—it was lovely to have you there. It truly was a brilliant day. We can’t wait to watch our microforest grow and provide opportunities for the whole school community to take part in some fantastic outdoor learning. 🌳

Year 5 had an amazing treat during swimming today - we only went and bumped into Steve Backshall from the CBBC 's 'Deadly 60' series! The children were so excited to meet Steve, who very kindly put a pause on his day to answer the children's wildlife questions. 🐍 Thank you so much for indulging us, Mr Backshall! :D

Year 4 Update This term, Year 4 have been very busy across all areas of the curriculum and have enjoyed lots of hands-on learning experiences. In Science, we have been studying Teeth and the Digestive System. One of our experiments investigated which liquids cause the most tooth decay. We used eggs to represent tooth enamel and discovered that vinegar causes the most damage to teeth. We also explored faeces and how scientists can examine it to identify what animals eat and detect potential illnesses. To support this learning, we played “Poo Bingo” and made different types of faeces out of playdough for each other to identify! In Art, we enjoyed designing and creating our own sculptures in the style of Henry Moore using clay. In DT, we have just started our new unit on designing and making our own pizzas, linked to our previous History learning about Ancient Rome. Last week, we tasted a variety of pizzas and rated them out of 5. We described what we liked and disliked about each one, helping us to choose our favourite toppings ready for designing and making our own pizzas on our Italian Day next week. In Maths, TTRockstars battles are really motivating the children to learn their times tables. Starfish class thoroughly enjoyed their well-deserved cakes for winning this round-well done!

We are so proud of one of our lovely children here at Manadon Vale, who took the time to write a thoughtful letter to Crownhill Fire and Rescue Service 🚒 It’s wonderful to see such kindness, curiosity, and appreciation for the amazing work our emergency services do every day. Well done – what a fantastic example of using your voice to make a positive connection in our community! 👏

🍓🍌 DT Smoothie Making – Octopuses Class 🥝🍊 The children have been learning about healthy foods and designed their own smoothies. They then helped to chop, slice and prepare their ingredients before making their creations. Great teamwork and lots of tasty results! 🍹✨

Today in PE, the children in Octopuses had a fantastic time developing their jumping skills! We focused on four different types of jumps: rocket, star, tuck and pike. The children showed great enthusiasm as they practised each one, working hard to improve their technique, balance and control. Please excuse the slightly blurry photos… turns out capturing super-speedy action jumps is harder than it looks!

Today we held our Living Street Audit and had the opportunity to show Anna all the fantastic work we’ve been doing. We shared our ideas, discussed what’s important to us, and highlighted the changes we would love to see around our school to make the area safer. The children were brilliant at explaining their thoughts and it was amazing to see their confidence and passion shine through. We’re so proud of their hard work and can’t wait to see what happens next!🚧🚧
