Rights Respecting Schools Award

We provide a high-quality science education, building the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all children are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, children at Manadon are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all children:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

Manadon uses a curriculum plan developed by Plymouth Science.  This provides clear guidance to all teaching staff on the progression and application of substantive and disciplinary knowledge and skills expected for each topic, in each year group.  Key vocabulary is identified for each science topic and it is expected that these keywords will be explored through teaching and be displayed in classrooms and/or in books.

🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️ WOW Walk to School Update! 🌟 We are so proud of our children’s commitment to active travel! Children have now earned their second WOW badges, which our School Council will be handing out tomorrow. Well done everyone! 👏 In December, 194 children earned their first WOW badge. In January, an incredible 254 children have now earned either their first or second badge! That means 92% of our school is now taking part in at least one active journey to school each week – what an amazing achievement! 🌍💚

A huge thank you to everyone who joined in and supported the Wicked Worldwide Singalong, live streamed from the O2 arena! We joined approximately 300,000 children from across the WORLD and sang our excited lil' hearts out. The children looked fabulous in their green and pink - a great way to end the day! 💚🎵 Young Voices

In science, Year 3 have been learning about different types of rocks. We looked at: Chalk, Garnet, Limestone, Marble and Slate We carried out tests to find out each rock’s properties. The tests we did: Hardness – how easy the rock is to scratch Durability – how strong the rock is and whether it breaks easily Waterproof – whether water soaks into the rock Reaction to acid – what happens when acid is added

Today, we had an exciting visit from Peninsula Dental, who delivered the “Open Wide and Step Inside” program to our Year 2 students! The children had a fantastic time learning about dental care and each received a book, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a timer to help them practice good oral hygiene at home. 🦷

Year 4 started a new Science unit this term, Animals Including Humans. In the first week, we began by recapping our learning about skeletons from Year 3 and discussing how this links to our new focus on the digestive system in Year 4. We started by labelling the parts of the digestive system and learning about their functions. We then took part in a very hands-on science experiment to explore how each part works and how food travels through the body. The children were fully immersed and thoroughly enjoyed the experience—although some were feeling quite queasy by the end! 🤢What a fantastic way to start our new topic! 👏😄

💡🌍 Energy Saving Week 🌍💡 Next week we are supporting Energy Saving Week by making small changes to save energy and help our planet. Our school council members will be reminding everyone to switch off lights and screens when they’re not in use and to think about how we can all use less energy every day. We are also continuing taking part in the WOW Walk to School scheme, encouraging children to walk, scoot, or cycle. Some children are very close to earning their second WOW badge — amazing effort! 🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️
