The PE curriculum and vision

We provide a high-quality science education, building the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the worldโ€™s future prosperity, and all children are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, children at Manadon are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all children:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

Manadon uses a curriculum plan developed by Plymouth Science.ย  This provides clear guidance to all teaching staff on the progression and application of substantive and disciplinary knowledge and skills expected for each topic, in each year group.ย  Key vocabulary is identified for each science topic and it is expected that these keywords will be explored through teaching and be displayed in classrooms and/or in books.

Way back on the Year 3 Transition Day in the summer, Coral Class were asked to design a winter hat. At the time they thought that Mrs Harden had perhaps forgotten what season it was. However, today they had a very special visit from Mrs Harden's Mum, who had been working hard to knit all of their designs! They absolutely loved seeing their designs turned into unique Christmas gifts. The biggest thank you to Mrs Harden's Mum and also to Mrs Gee and Mrs Ladd who made all the pom poms for the top of their hats. A very happy Christmas from Coral Class ๐ŸŽ„โญ
